For power and precision: maxon at work

maxon drives are precise, efficient, and deliver a lot of power in a very compact unit. They are used in deep drilling, in surgical robots, bicycles, airplanes, tattoo machines, as well as on Mars.

In the aerospace industry, a wide range of applications is controlled by actuators. They need to withstand tough ambient conditions, with strong vibrations and extreme temperature fluctuations. To increase reliability even further, safety-critical functions in airplanes use actuators with dual motors. One such actuator is installed at the jet engine to shut off the fuel supply in the event of a fire. This function must be available at all times and under any circumstances. The electric drives are therefore equipped with two high-quality DC motors.

Let yourself be inspired by this and many other application stories – from medical technology, robotics, or just from everyday life.

CYBATHLON - connecting people and technology

In the CYBATHLON, people with physical disabilities compete against each other in obstacle races – supported by state-of-the-art technical assistance systems. The teams and their pilots compete in six disciplines: brain-computer interface (BCI) race, functional electrical stimulation (FES) bike race, powered arm prosthesis race, powered leg prosthesis race, powered exoskeleton race, and powered wheelchair race. The CYBATHLON is hosted by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH). With this event, the institute provides a platform for exchange between technology developers, people with disabilities, and the public.

CYBATHLON 2020 will take place on November 13 – 14, 2020 – globally and in a new format, at the teams’ home bases. They will set up their infrastructure for the competition and film their races. From Zurich, the competitions will be broadcast through a new platform in a unique live program. At the CYBATHLON 2020 Global Edition, pilots and their development teams will show what they have achieved together over the past years and will offer the spectators an unforgettable competition experience.

maxon is supporting the CYBATHLON as a Presenting Partner. Our motors, gearheads, and controllers have been used in prostheses, exoskeletons, and wheelchairs for years. maxon is very proud to be a partner of such an inspiring project – and we hope to learn more about future requirements for drive systems used “n assistive technologies from the teams and pilots. Eugen Elmiger, CEO maxon Group: «We believe that excellent engineers with a curiosity for new things can make the world a better place. This is why maxon has supported the CYBATHLON from the very beginning.»
